Mark Alger Photography

Membership Type:
Individual

Mark Alger specialises in Outdoor (architecture/man-made subjects) and Landscape Photography, although he has also undertaken commissions for product work, most recently for food imagery.

Mark looks to create images that will encourage an emotional response, trying to evoke a feeling of time and place and continuing to do so with a real sense of personal exploration. Whilst not averse to portraying the classic vista or broader view he will often seek the intimate aspects of a composition, attempting to ask questions through his image making.

I have been making music since my early teen years, and now am in a lucky position where, combined with arts management, I get to do it for a living. I’m the bass player for Punjabi electronica band The Dhol Foundation, second mestre for Reading’s community samba band Beatroots, and play for a range of other bands and artists. My time is split between working as a freelance music educator, workshop facilitator, and arts project manager based in the south east of England.

I am a painter and to support my practice I also teach in schools, universities and run my own workshops. My interest is in colour and the shapes of places. The catalyst for me is the coast, in particular harbour towns with their mixture of the natural and the man-made but my aim is always to transform my subject into something new and my paintings constantly change and evolve during the painting process. Anything can happen in my paintings and often does.
